The stars have aligned. Three sold-out shades come back on Friday.

Supernova, Nebula and Light-Year were limited editions, and they went. Fewer than one hundred bottles come back to Australia and New Zealand this Friday, full size only, at $47 each.

Nothing is on sale here yet. The three go live at midnight on Friday, Sydney time, which is 2:00am Friday in New Zealand.

Why only three

Six shades went out. These are the three you kept asking for.

Written in the Stars ran once. When it sold out it came off the site in Australia and in the United States, and it stayed off. The requests did not stop, so the laboratory ran three of the six again.

Aurora, Gravity and In Orbit are not part of this run. If you are waiting on one of those, this is not the week.

Two holographics and a duochrome

They are not three versions of the same idea.

Supernova and Light-Year are holographics: opaque colour with rainbow particles that fire in direct light. Nebula is a duochrome, semi-sheer, and shifts hue with the angle rather than scattering. All three are $47, and buying all three gets you three different behaviours, not three colours.

Supernova

A holographic pink that throws rainbow the moment daylight hits it. The one that went first. Opaque in two coats, so the holographic particles sit on a flat pink ground instead of sinking into the nail.

No. 827 · Duochrome · Semi-sheer

Nebula

A peacock blue-green that turns purple as your hand moves. The only semi-sheer of the three, and the only true duochrome. Wear it alone for a tinted shift, or over a dark base to push the purple forward.

Light-Year

Sandy gold with a holographic rainbow flash. Warm and neutral until it catches the light, then the whole nail scatters. The quietest of the three in shade, the loudest in flash.

The part people skip

A holographic only fires on a flat, hard base.

Reflective particles need a level surface to bounce off. On a ridged or oily nail they sink and the flash goes flat, which is why the same bottle can look spectacular on one hand and dull on the other.

  1. Scrub each nail with Nail Prep on a lint-free pad to strip oils and lotion.
  2. Two coats of Base Coat, each dried to matte, to level the surface.
  3. Two coats of colour. Supernova and Light-Year cover in two; Nebula is semi-sheer by design.
  4. One coat of Top Coat to seal and add shine. Colour air-dries hard in five minutes.

Dr. Vivian Valenty formulated this in a laboratory, not a colour house.

A bio-organic chemist who wanted a lacquer that would harden without a lamp and come off without damage. The four-step system she built is why a holographic can go on at home and still be flat enough to fire.
